Terms of use

Use the data. Understand what it is and is not.

The data is informational

Scores and grades on this site are derived from consumer complaints filed with NHTSA. Those complaints are unverified allegations, not established defects, and NHTSA does not confirm them before publication. Nothing here is a statement that any vehicle is defective, unsafe or unfit for purpose.

Do not treat this site as a substitute for a professional pre-purchase inspection, a vehicle history report, or a manufacturer recall lookup by VIN. For an authoritative recall check on a specific vehicle, use NHTSA's own VIN tool.

No warranty

The site is provided as is. We make no warranty that any figure is complete, current or free of error, and accept no liability for decisions made on the basis of it. Source data changes; our copy is a snapshot with a stated vintage.

Reuse

Two different things are involved here and they carry different terms.

The source records — NHTSA complaints, recalls and investigations, and the EPA fuel-economy data — are US Government works in the public domain. Use them freely; you do not need us for that, and every endpoint is listed.

The computed dataset — our scores, grades, indices and the editorial text — is ours. You may quote figures with attribution and a link. Bulk re-publication is not permitted without permission — ask, and the answer will usually be yes.

Trademarks

Vehicle make and model names are trademarks of their respective owners and are used here only to identify the vehicles described, which is nominative fair use. No manufacturer logo appears on this site. Model Year Index is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any manufacturer, nor by NHTSA or the EPA.
