The RX carries an overall B on a record with one heavy year at the front and a
long, ordinary tail behind it. The label names 2010 and 2016.
The 2010 car is the worst by a distance, at 2.11 times the model’s own median
on 119 complaints. Speed control leads at 39 reports, and the accounts describe
the car accelerating or failing to slow as expected, several involving cruise
control — the same period as Toyota’s unintended-acceleration recalls, and
Lexus is Toyota’s luxury division. Braking sits second at 21 with more of the
same accounts filed under a different heading. That year also carries 24 crash
allegations and five fire allegations.
Nothing since approaches it. The 2016 car, the other year named, sits at 1.65
times the median on 83 complaints with airbags, braking and drivetrain close
together at 11, 10 and 9 — no single subject carrying it. The 2017 car records
the same 83 complaints at 1.57 and also grades D.
Between and after them the file is quiet. The 2013 and 2014 cars grade A on 16
and 21 complaints, and 2018 and 2020 grade B on 38 and 34.
Two later patterns are worth noting without over-reading them. Fuel system
leads the 2019 car at 26 of 75 reports, and airbags and restraints leads the
2021 car at 44 of 77 — a single category taking more than half a year’s
complaints, which usually indicates a recall population rather than a fault
owners met on the road.
At least twelve distinct recall campaigns touch the model, and no scored year
carries more than three of them. That is a light recall record by this site’s
standards, and it is much of why the overall grade holds at B with three years
in the D band.
