The Focus has one problem and it dominates everything else. Drivetrain complaints are the largest single group in every flagged year, and in 2012 they outnumber the next-worst category two to one. Owners describe the same sequence over and over: a shudder pulling away from a stop, hesitation between gears, then a loss of drive. The median odometer reading at the point of complaint is around 42,000 miles — well past most warranties, which is a large part of why these filings are so numerous and so angry.

This is the DPS6 PowerShift, the dry dual-clutch automatic Ford fitted to the Focus from 2012. Ford issued repeated technical service bulletins and extended the transmission warranty, and the design was the subject of long-running litigation.
